Oil and Gas Workers Fatality Rates Are 7 Times The National Average For All Occupations.
New Mexico houses the Permian Basin: the “crown jewel” of the world’s oil industry. The Basin has brought in thousands of jobs for workers, but oil field work has its downsides. According to OSHA, It is reported that a total of 120 fatal work injuries occurred in the oil and gas extraction industry in 2008–making it one of the most dangerous jobs in America.
Legal protection is necessary for workers and families affected by oil field-related injuries. Some workers fear that their children will work in the oil industry, and one way for workers to protect their children is ensuring that they receive an education and advocate for the protection of other oil field workers.
The “Oil Free” Education and Policy Initiative
