9 Killed in a Head-on Accident Involving a New Mexico University’s Golf Team

Andrews, TX (March 16, 2022) – Nine people are dead and two are in critical condition after a van carrying a university golf team crashed into a pickup truck. The accident occurred at around 8 PM nine miles from the town of Andrews as the team drove back to New Mexico after playing a tournament in Midland.

The team from University of the Southwest in Hobbs, NM was traveling north on FM 1788 when a pickup truck heading the opposite direction drove into the northbound lane. The Dodge 2500 pickup hit the Ford Transit van head-on, causing a large vehicle fire.

According to officials at the university, there were nine passengers in the van, including students and the coach. Only two students survived the crash.

First responders airlifted them to both University Medical Center and Covenant Health in Lubbock. The driver and passenger of the pickup, the coach, and six students died in the crash.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation. Currently, police don’t know why the pickup swerved into oncoming traffic.
