Two Killed and One Injured in Lea County, NM Crash

April 29, 2022

Lea County, NM (April 28, 2022) – At approximately 4:30 pm on April 28th, New Mexico State Police were dispatched to a deadly crash on New Mexico State Road 176 milepost 17 west of Eunice, NM. The crash involved a Peterbilt tractor-trailer and two trucks.

A Peterbilt tractor-trailer and a Chevrolet Silverado 2500 were stopped in an eastbound lane due to construction. A Ford F-350, pulling a flatbed trailer, rear-ended the Silverado truck pushing it into the back of the Peterbilt tractor-trailer.

The driver, Cortney DeWayne Hartman, and passenger, Christopher Daniel Barrandey, of the Chevrolet Silverado were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Peterbilt was uninjured and the Ford F-350 driver was taken to a Lubbock, TX hospital.

Further investigation indicates seatbelts were worn during the crash, and that alcohol is not believed to be a factor. New Mexico State Police are still investigating this accident with the assistance of the New Mexico State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Bureau, Drone Team, and Crash Reconstruction Team.
